A short look at how lessons run at Hallwood Training Services, straight from Ian himself.
Felixstowe sits right at the end of the A14 on the Suffolk coast, and it is a genuinely good place to learn to drive. The residential roads behind the seafront are quiet enough for your very first lessons, the town's roundabouts give you real practice at judging gaps and choosing lanes, and the open road out towards Levington is ideal for building speed and confidence before you head into Ipswich.
Ian Hallwood has 23 years' experience as a driving instructor and teaches learners across Felixstowe, Walton, Old Felixstowe, Trimley St Mary and Trimley St Martin. He is a Grade A instructor, which puts him in the top 31% of instructors in the country, and his learners have an extremely high first-time pass rate.
Another first-time pass at the Ipswich test centre
Every learner is different, but most Felixstowe pupils follow a similar path from their first quiet road to test day.
Every Felixstowe learner starts on a quiet residential road like Colneis Road or Rosemary Avenue, where there's room to get used to the clutch, the steering and the mirrors without any traffic pressure.
Once you're moving off and stopping smoothly, you'll tackle the roundabouts at High Road East and Beatrice Avenue. These are the ones you'll use every day once you've passed, so you'll know them inside out.
Levington Road is quiet enough to practise the full set of controls, acceleration exercises and pulling over to stop. It's also where Ian runs emergency stop training at speed, in safe and controlled conditions.
Roughly the last two-thirds of your training moves into Ipswich, so you're completely at home on the roads around the test centre long before test day arrives.
You'll also head out on a navigation exercise to Stowmarket and do country road training towards Coddenham or Orford Castle, so you're ready for real driving, not just the test.
There's nothing about Felixstowe that should put you off. Ian assesses you constantly, spots risks early and gives you the input you need to deal with them safely, so problems are sorted before they become habits.
Ian believes every learner should know exactly what an emergency stop feels like at 70mph before they pass their test, not find out for the first time on a wet motorway years later.
On Levington Road, in safe and controlled conditions, you'll either sit as a passenger while Ian demonstrates it, or have a go yourself once you're ready. It's one of the things that sets lessons with Hallwood Training Services apart, and one former learner credits it with keeping him safe on the M6 more than ten years after he passed.
You taught me to drive over ten years ago. I was on the M6 at 5am in persistent rain when a motorbike lost traction ahead and stopped in my lane. I not only stopped safely but controlled the skid on the slick road. I credit the muscle memory you instilled in me. I could literally hear your voice in my head at the moment of action. The snow lesson and the high-speed emergency stops made the difference. It works!

Felixstowe learners normally take their practical test at the Ipswich driving test centre on Wentworth Road, Ransomes Europark (IP3 9SW). It sits on the Felixstowe side of Ipswich, straight up the A14, and it's where most of your later lessons take place, so the roads will already feel familiar by the time you book.
If you'd prefer, or if you need an earlier date, your test can also be planned for one of these centres instead:
Ian will help you decide which one is right for you.
Felixstowe learners pay exactly the same as everyone else. Lessons are tailored to you, and test fees are not included in any price below.

Reviews from learners taught by Hallwood Training Services across Felixstowe and Ipswich.
Ian is by far the best driving instructor you will find in Felixstowe and Ipswich. I had a lot of different instructors before I found Ian on Google. He is patient, calm, professional and friendly and genuinely cares about his students passing, and wants them to get through. He didn't make me have too many lessons, the right number I needed to pass. He will not make you have endless lessons like some other instructors do and you will be in safe hands with Ian. I am recommending him to friends and family as he is so good and an answer to prayer. I felt like giving up at times as I had some bad experiences previously, but not with Ian. Give him a go and you won't be disappointed.

The best decision I made when learning to drive was choosing Ian as my instructor. He is kind, patient, funny and makes you feel at ease while you are in the car with him. He will teach you everything you need to know and will go over things multiple times if you ask. I would not have passed without him. If you need an instructor in Ipswich or Felixstowe, Ian is the guy to choose! Thank you so much for helping me spread my car driving wings.

Would definitely recommend. I wasn't very confident at the start and he helped me feel relaxed and made the lessons enjoyable. He also went beyond to talk about how the car actually worked so that you can understand what you are doing better. I ended up passing first time because of his support and patience to help me improve. Thank you!

Ian was such a lovely and helpful instructor. I was very nervous and Ian reassured me that I would do well. He has been amazing and I am now a confident driver, which made me pass first time! I can't thank him enough.

For starters, what an absolute legend! Such a chilled, friendly guy who actually teaches you to drive! I had some experience but needed to brush up on things, which he was excellent at telling me, as I struggle to process information, so he explained things so well. And out of all that I passed first time. I would absolutely recommend Ian! I will miss the chats and company on the drives. Cheers Ian, all the best!

I couldn't recommend my driving instructor enough! Thanks to his patience, support and excellent teaching, I passed my driving test first time. Every lesson was enjoyable, and he always made me feel comfortable and at ease, even when I was nervous. He explained everything clearly, built my confidence, and made learning to drive something I genuinely looked forward to. If you're looking for an instructor who's friendly, professional, and truly wants you to succeed, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.

Really amazing driving instructor, teaches you the best way to do things and really understands how to improve your difficulties when driving. Felt really comfortable with Ian and always had an enjoyable lesson, which can sometimes be difficult to find in a driving instructor. Highly recommend!
