A short look at how lessons run at Hallwood Training Services, straight from Ian himself.
Test passed at Ipswich, where Woodbridge learners sit their test
Woodbridge is a busy market town on the River Deben, a short run up the A12 from Ipswich. Between the town centre, the villages around it and the A12 itself, learners from Woodbridge get a genuinely varied mix of driving, which is exactly why Ian plans lessons around where you live and how you're progressing rather than following the same route every week.
Ian Hallwood teaches learners from Woodbridge, Melton, Martlesham, Kesgrave and Rushmere St Andrew, with pick-up from home, work or Woodbridge railway station. He is a Grade A instructor with 23 years' experience, and his learners have an extremely high first-time pass rate.
From a quiet first drive to test day, here's the path most Woodbridge learners follow with Ian.
Woodbridge learners normally begin on Arundel Way or Penshurst Road in the Broke Hall area on the east side of Ipswich. It's on the Woodbridge side of town, the roads are quiet, and it means your first lesson is spent learning the car rather than battling the A12.
Levington Road and Felixstowe Road are used for control work, acceleration exercises and pulling over to stop, because they're quiet and safe. It's also where Ian runs emergency stop training at speed, something he believes every learner should experience before they pass. James Balmer, a former learner, credits those high-speed emergency stops with helping him stop safely on the M6 years later.
As your confidence and skill grow, the last two-thirds of your training moves between Ipswich and Felixstowe, taking in busier roads, bigger roundabouts, dual carriageways and the area around the test centre.
Later lessons take you on a navigation exercise to Stowmarket and country road training out towards Coddenham or Orford Castle, so you're just as comfortable on the rural roads around Woodbridge as you are in town.
Most Woodbridge learners sit their test at Ipswich, but Colchester, Bury St Edmunds and Clacton are all options too. You go when Ian's progress tracker says you're ready, not after a set number of hours.
Woodbridge learners can take their test at Ipswich, Colchester, Bury St Edmunds or Clacton. Ian normally plans for Ipswich, because that's where the bulk of your training happens and the test centre on Wentworth Road, Ransomes Europark (IP3 9SW) sits on the east side of town, on the same side as Woodbridge. By the time you book your test, the roads around it will feel like second nature.
Prefer a different centre, or need an earlier date? Just say. Ian will talk you through the options and plan the last few lessons around whichever centre you choose.
Woodbridge learners pay the same as learners everywhere else, with no travel surcharge. Test fees are not included in any price below.
Not sure which option is right for you? Ask Ian. There is no pressure, and the right plan depends entirely on you. Prices correct as of 10 October 2026 and subject to change.
Reviews from learners taught by Hallwood Training Services across Woodbridge and Ipswich.
Ian's an excellent and highly experienced driving instructor and I really got on well with him! He goes above and beyond in terms of preparing you for your driving test and also teaching you how to drive safely, confidently, and proactively. I passed my test first time with only four minors and felt very confident going into that thanks to Ian's teaching. I'd strongly recommend Hallwood Training Services to anyone looking for an exceptional driving instructor! 5 stars, not a single bad thing to say!

Ian is an outstanding teacher! I was a very anxious driver and took a long time to gain confidence, but have been able to progress well and even pass first time, all thanks to Ian. He is a very patient, friendly and supportive person, who truly cares if you succeed and feel comfortable. I would recommend Hallwood Training Services wholeheartedly to anyone learning to drive, and looking for someone experienced and kind. Thanks so much!

Ian was amazing at reassuring me when I first started as I was quite anxious, but he helped me gain confidence in my ability and led me to passing my test first time! I would highly recommend Ian as he did not just teach me how to drive, but he gave me confidence and experience with situations which would normally have made anyone panic. He also taught me how the car actually worked, which helped my understanding of why certain things had to be done. Along with a lot of laughs along the way. Overall, I could not recommend Ian enough!
